We did the system from used plastic barrels and about 20 feet of PVC, a saw, a drill and some glue. It can be powered on a standard electric plug, using an old boat sump pump, or, we found some used solar panels and hooked them up to a used car battery, thus the entire system is free from the grid. Fish dirty water waste is pumped to barrels filled with gravel, and the plants and algae convert the ammonia, nitrites into nitrates, and feed on them. The process clears the water, replaces the CO2 with Oxygen, and pumps it back to the fish. Here is a program that Eden Gardens can use in food production campuses around the world, or you in your back yard. Power it with wind turbines, or solar panels and build a greenhouse and you have a commercial agricultural operation, that is energy free, and water can be pumped from irrigation powered with sun and wind.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is a current HOT topic in Galion.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In that this blog is about <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>aquaponic gardening</strong></span>, of course we are going to promote it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>However, we have listed below a few examples of other community</strong></span> efforts in conventional 10' x 20' plots of in-ground gardening. For those thinking in those terms I would like to suggest that they consider planning for raised beds, table-top boxes, other container gardening, and directed self-watering methods. We do want to include youth and seniors and the bend-over impaired (<em>like me = getting down is easy, getting back up is a challenge</em>) don't we?<br />
<br /><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Larry Hall's videos on self-watering</strong></span> and other clever economical set-ups are available on <em><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>YouTube</strong></span></em> and under our <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Horizontal Rails Tab</strong></span>. Be sure to check out his Kiddie Pool set-up as well for cluster watering.<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">I attended one of the most positive civic meetings</span></strong> I have

to provide park activities to youth and seniors alike. Some in attendance
stressed that particular activities could bring income into the city from
outside. Building community pride was expressed. A task force of citizens was
suggested to move from a ‘could we?’ discussion to a ‘this is how we can’
mindset. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: medium;">*****</span></span></strong></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It has been brought to my attention that the <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Galion Garden
Group BlogSpot</strong></span> is so packed with different ways to start aquaponic gardening
that a beginner is overwhelmed. I admit that I have a tendency to promote
something I find worthwhile with facts, evidence, particulars, specifics and
more facts.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>There is no one prefect way</strong></span> for an individual to start
aquaponic gardening. Each of us will have one or two systems that seems viable
and appropriate for us given the current time and place. If you have an
aquarium or a tote for fish and an empty container stashed somewhere, a grow
bed or raft system could be constructed. If you have some PVC pipe, unused rail
gutters lying around, or food grade buckets or barrels you may consider one of
those methods.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Whatever you do,</strong></span> if aquaponics is new to you start small,
set-up an experimental test system, and as you learn you will find the right
method for you. If, like me, you aren’t mechanically inclined purchase a small,
s-m-a-l-l, SMALL ready-to-go system.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Fall is upon us, fewer in-ground crops are available.</strong></span>
However, starting an aquaponic garden indoors now will provide you with some
fresh, nutritious, healthy food throughout the winter and get you ready to
expand your system for the spring and summer season next year.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-size: medium;">*****</span></span></strong></span></strong></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>
</strong></span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>I don’t know.</strong></span> Someone local pioneer, like <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Chris Gimbel at Aquaworld</strong></span>, who is testing several systems is an available face-to-face local source. GGG Admin is currently working on discovering others in and around Galion that have a working aquaponic system up, running and willing to share their experiences.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The books I have referred to on the GGG BlogSpot; the articles and videos all have good stuff to consider. <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Murray Hallam</strong></span>, from Australia is the apparent God-Father of Aquaponics. <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Will Allen</strong></span> of Growing Power in WI and <span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Sylvia Bernstein</strong></span> in CO each have contributed to our understanding of this sustainable food growing system through their books and videos.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>The YouTube videos</strong></span> that are made by well-intentioned individuals, particularly those who have shared their do-it-yourself construction of aquaponic systems and accessories are more than helpful. Even those that have a product or information for sale serve an educational purpose.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I enjoy many YouTube contributors, even though some of them use hydroponic methods which can easily be converted to aquaponics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;"><strong>To clarify:</strong></span> Hydroponics uses petroleum based nutrients that are as harmful to the Earth upon disposal, in the same manner as the in-ground farmers that use pesticides and chemicals. Aquaponics is a natural ecological growing system using fish waste-water to feed the plants and the plants clean the water for return to the fish tank.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Other YouTubers are promoting in-soil growing. Their expertise helps any beginner. The videos of larger commercial aquaponic/hydroponic producers are of value because efficiency and cost effectiveness is one of their major concerns which provides us with insight toward future expansion of our own production.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>My advice? Search through the tabs.</strong></span> Find something that strikes your fancy. If a YouTuber impresses you subscribe to their channel, peruse their past productions and you will automatically be notified when they do future videos. If you find a website, blog, Facebook or Twitter page of interest to you, bookmark it and follow them.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>If someone wants to start a Galion Aquaponic Gardening</strong></span> Facebook page or Twitter - feel free to do so. <span style="color: red; font-size: xx-small;"><strong> [HINT - HINT !!!]</strong></span> If we all talk-it-up perhaps one day we will have a thriving Community Supported Agricultural complex in the food desert currently known as Uptowne Galion.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">The following evaluation</span></strong> within this article struck me as
important – “It takes four-tenths of a pound of feed, mostly soy and pea
protein, to make a pound of Beyond Meat. (A chicken breast is more than 60%
water.) By comparison, even after decades of selective breeding and production
efficiencies, broilers require nearly three pounds of feed, mostly corn and
soy, to yield a pound of ready-to-cook chicken.”<o:p></o:p></span><br />

</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>That quote is similar to the difference between</strong></span> feeding our
farm animals grain and feeding them aquaponic grown fodder. The fodder is more
beneficial to the animals and 1 pound of grain becomes 5 to 8 pounds of fodder,
cutting feed costs as much as 75%.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>[See:
Fodder under the Crops tab.]<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Lots to mull over in both articles.</strong></span> <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Fortunately, we have Aquaponics as a starting

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Chris reported that dozens of visitors</span></strong> were enthusiastically interested in what he was able to show them. The videos provide an easy visual learning experience and can be watched repeatedly.<br /><br /><span style="color: blue;"><strong>One practitioner’s system may not be idea for you;</strong></span> often if you are considering a grow bed set-up, something a rail/tube or vertical gardener has done will give you that “Aha” moment that provides just the answer/concept you were looking for.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="color: blue;"><strong>This site will deal primarily with a Do-It-Yourself interest</strong></span> and practice, however, there is a great deal to learn from the sites that are selling products and systems; you may even chose to go that route. GGG is not selling or endorsing any products or services. Futuristic considerations include forming a group of enthusiasts to create a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) assosciation.</span><br />
